The U.S. dictionary publisher said there was 70 percent increase in online searches for the word this year, compared with 2016, crediting White House counselor Kellyanne Conway’s anti-feminist comments in February as one driver. Entertainment also played a role, with Hulu’s The Handmaiden’s Tale lighting a fire for feminism and Gal Gadot’s powerhouse performance in Wonder Woman winning new fans for the political movement. But not everyone is pleased with the pick. Social gives feminism 60 percent negative sentiment, and a lot of that has to do with the conversation around the topic. With feminism’s worldview centered on critiquing the patriarchal environment that exists across most of the globe, it’s not surprising that people talk about negative subjects alongside feminism and that feminism has detractors. But there is no denying that it is central to an important and ongoing public conversation. –Hugo Guzman
