Surgeon and author Atul Gawande added fuel to that fire during a Sept. 8 Vox podcast when he was asked who was responsible for the current crisis. “We started it,” he responded, singling out his profession for treating aches and pains by freely dispensing too many drugs. As New York magazine recently noted, a study by the Brookings Institution concluded, “Rising opioid prescriptions could plausibly account for one-fifth of the decline in the labor-force participation among American men between 1999 and 2015.” The Trump Administration declared an opioid emergency last month to combat the problem but has yet to accept all the recommendations of a commission headed by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.
