Ever since she was a kid, Rachel Reyes knew she wanted to be a mom – and she certainly wasn’t going to let her being queer get in the way. When her then-wife was finally ready to start a family, they dove right in – from at-home methods to fertility treatments, all with the help of their close gay male friend who agreed to be the father. One morning, after a year of treatments and disappointments, an at-home test revealed she was pregnant. Not only that, but follow-up tests revealed she was carrying twins! Fast forward several years later, her children are now precocious toddlers being raised by three parents, seven godparents, and with a veritable queer village of folks looking after them.

my name is Rachel Reyes I’m from
0:07
Sicklerville New Jersey I’ve known since
0:09
I was
0:11
a kid maybe like 16 that I’ve wanted to
0:14
be then I wanted to be a mother I always
0:16
used to say that I wanted like seven
0:18
kids 12 kids a bunch of kids and I tend
0:21
to get what I want
0:23
um and I knew that being queer being gay
0:25
wasn’t going to stop me from being a
0:27
mother I was young when I got married 23
0:29
once I got married I wanted to start
0:31
right away having kids starting a family
0:34
but my wife at the time wasn’t ready so
0:38
we waited a few years
0:40
and then it was December of
0:44
2017. I just remember coming home from
0:47
work one day
0:48
I went upstairs and I see like a gift
0:51
bag on the bed and I look in the gift
0:53
bag and I see all these baby things I
0:55
see like
0:56
pacifiers and baby bottles and I think
1:00
pregnancy tests and bibs and things like
1:02
that and that was her way of telling me
1:03
she was ready to to have kids we talked
1:06
to her best friend uh Luis and he was
1:08
our roommate at the time so we sat down
1:10
and we asked if he would help us we
1:14
knew that we didn’t want to go the route
1:17
of like an anonymous sperm donor or a
1:20
sperm bank we knew that for our family
1:21
it was better for would be better for us
1:24
if our kids knew their biological father
1:26
and had a relationship with him he was
1:28
willing to help us and he was willing to
1:30
have a relationship as the father of our
1:32
children or our child
1:34
and so we decided to start a family once
1:39
we decided that we were going to start a
1:41
family I went ahead and I bought us some
1:43
T-shirts mine said Mama Bear my wife
1:45
said Mama Bear and our friends said Papa
1:48
Bear and I just put it away I didn’t
1:50
tell them I bought it I was gonna give
1:52
it to them as soon as I found out I was
1:54
pregnant just as a surprise we tried
1:57
various at home methods
2:01
and they didn’t end up working every
2:04
month I would take a pregnancy test and
2:07
every month it would be negative and I
2:08
would get my period and you know we
2:10
tried at home different methods for like
2:12
a year and finally decided to just go to
2:15
a fertility clinic now when you go to a
2:18
fertility clinic and you’re not
2:20
um
2:21
you’re using a known donor who’s not
2:24
your your partner there’s a lot of red
2:28
tape involved so we kind of had to
2:30
navigate that we did a procedure called
2:32
IUI
2:34
they give you some medication to
2:36
stimulate ovulation and then they do the
2:38
procedure in hopes that you get pregnant
2:39
we did it the first month and I took my
2:42
monthly pregnancy tests and it was
2:44
negative I got my period it was
2:47
disappointing but we decided to try
2:48
again and the second month
2:50
I felt a little bit different but I
2:54
didn’t really think anything of it I
2:55
didn’t want to get my hopes up they give
2:57
you an ultrasound before they do the
3:00
procedure and the person doing my
3:02
ultrasound did tell me that I was
3:04
releasing two eggs she told me you know
3:07
you could have twins chances of twins is
3:09
ten percent and I said that would be
3:11
great about 10 days after the procedure
3:15
I wanted to know at this point we had
3:18
been trying for over a year and it was
3:21
just negative pregnancy test after
3:23
negative pregnancy tests so I didn’t
3:25
expect anything to be positive but I
3:27
still wanted that definitive answer one
3:30
morning about 10 days after our our
3:32
second IUI I went downstairs
3:35
and everybody in the house was sleeping
3:38
I went downstairs by myself and decided
3:40
to take a pregnancy test right away I
3:43
saw a faint line and I was like I
3:46
couldn’t even believe it I was in shock
3:47
I could feel my my heart beating out of
3:50
my chest I was anxious and overwhelmed
3:52
and excited and I took another one just
3:55
to be sure and that one was also
3:57
positive a faint line the first thing I
4:00
did was ran upstairs and waking my wife
4:03
up and tell her that and show her the
4:06
pregnancy test and she was
4:08
completely in shock and super excited
4:11
and we both got up and ran to luis’s
4:14
room down the down the hallway and woke
4:18
him up and shared the good news with him
4:21
all three of us were just hugging and
4:23
crying and excited and emotional and
4:26
that’s when I I got the the shirts out
4:29
that I had bought a year prior when we
4:32
first started trying and I gave him our
4:34
shirts and that’s when we knew we were
4:37
going to be parents about 14 days after
4:40
the procedure they have you come in and
4:41
do blood work to confirm whether or not
4:43
you’re pregnant our blood work came back
4:45
positive and our numbers were were
4:47
pretty high and then they come they have
4:48
you come in again to repeat the blood
4:50
work just to make sure that your
4:51
hormones are doubling how they’re
4:54
supposed to and mine were not doubling
4:57
they were like quadrupling so I go in
4:59
for the ultrasound and I just remember
5:01
laying there in the ultrasound
5:02
technician is you know confirming that
5:05
I’m pregnant and she’s she asked me
5:08
um how many eggs did they say you were
5:11
ovulating and I said two and she was
5:14
like yeah well I see two heartbeats I
5:17
didn’t know what to say I had no words I
5:19
don’t think I even responded to the
5:21
ultrasound technician but I remember
5:23
just calling my wife and telling her and
5:27
she just kept saying no and then we told
5:30
their father and he was also just
5:33
overwhelmed and in shock and he was
5:35
going around telling everybody at work
5:37
that he’s going to be the father of twin
5:38
ends in October of that same year I gave
5:41
birth by C-section to these two
5:44
beautiful little baby girls they were
5:47
both four pounds 15 ounces and they were
5:49
born on my birthday on the day of my
5:51
birthday the three of us decided to give
5:55
them some godparents just to create a
5:57
village and a community of people who
5:59
love them
6:00
I picked three people
6:03
in my life to be their godparents and
6:05
each of them picked two people so they
6:07
ended up with seven godparents so our
6:10
girls have three queer parents they have
6:13
at least three queer godparents seven
6:16
godparents overall and they just have a
6:18
big Village and community of people who
6:20
are guiding them and and loving on them
6:22
so you know as a teenager I was correct
6:25
I loved being a mom I feel like it’s one
6:29
of the best things that I’ve decided to
6:31
do with my life my kids are amazing
6:33
they’re almost three and they’re you
6:37
know bilingual and they speak Spanish
6:39
and they understand English and they are
6:43
just sassy and and talkative and playful
6:49
and a little bit bossy and just like how
6:52
I was as a kid and I just love to see
6:55
them grow every day and to see
6:58
um how they how they interact with the
7:00
world and how they interact with me and
7:02
and
7:04
I love them you can make your life how
7:07
you want to make it your sexual
7:09
orientation being queer or any other
7:12
identity shouldn’t hinder you from
7:15
creating a life that you want creating
7:18
if that looks like a family for you or
7:21
for that or if it doesn’t but I was
7:23
particularly want queer people to know
7:25
that there are options for us to build
7:28
our families
7:29
um and make them look how we want them
7:32
to look
7:50
thank you
