The libertarian-leaning Freedom Caucus might favor getting rid of government-funded health care altogether, but Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), have quite the opposite in mind. Last month, Sanders announced he would introduce a single-payer bill to Congress, and this week the up-and-coming Harris said she would co-sponsor it. Neither one thinks the bill will ever hit the floor, but that’s not the point, said Harris. “This is about understanding, again, that healthcare should be a right, not a privilege,” the first-term senator told a crowd in Oakland on Wednesday. Despite some approval for the symbolic gesture, single-payer is still rough waters for Social. Sentiments are divided right down the middle, and although Social says it would mean huge gains for the American public, costs are driving down enthusiasm. –Hugo Guzman
