The Trump Administration and Republicans in Congress have attempted to muddy the waters by calling the situation the “Schumer Shutdown,” a reference to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.). They’re arguing that Schumer and Senate Democrats are purposely stonewalling a continuing resolution that would re-open the government for three or four weeks. But Schumer and company are countering that Republicans—especially President Trump—are being disingenuous. POTUS said he would sign any sort of compromise presented to him but then reneged when a bipartisan deal put together by Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) was tentatively agreed upon. Republicans control the White House and both chambers of Congress, and some of their own senators also voted against the continuing resolution they tried to force on to Democrats. Neither party is getting any pats on the back, though. “Democrats + Government Shutdown” has a 29 percent positive score over the last 2 days, while “Republicans + Government Shutdown” has a 15 percent positive score. –Alex Shultz
