The ruling from Senior United States District Judge Michael Baylson applies only to cities in his jurisdiction, such as Philadelphia. The City of Brotherly Love has declared itself a sanctuary city and refused to cooperate with federal immigration authorities, even suing Attorney General Jeff Sessions over the threat to withhold federal funds. Now, other sanctuary cities like Los Angeles and Seattle have a powerful precedent to cite in court should Sessions threaten them. The legal victory scores sanctuary cities no points on Twitter, however. Social media users there give sanctuary cities 64 percent negatives, and much of the downbeat buzz is focused on California. The Golden State has become a battleground for sanctuary cities because of new laws preventing state and local law enforcement officers from cooperating with immigration officials. Conservative-leaning municipalities in San Diego and Orange Counties have pushed back, passing their own laws to exempt themselves from the policy. –Hugo Guzman
