There have been a number of high-profile technical foul calls and ejections in 2017-18 that players and coaches feel are over the top and not in line with how games have been officiated previously. Referees, meanwhile, feel they are being treated disrespectfully. This week brought one olive branch moment of hope. After a game against the New York Knicks in which Golden State Warriors superstar Kevin Durant was ejected by referee James Williams, Durant re-watched the game tape and came to a new conclusion about his behavior: He was being a jerk. “I can’t react like that,” Durant said. “I wish I could apologize to James because that was definitely out of my character.” In response, the official NBA referee Twitter account wrote: “Apology accepted. This is the kind of common ground we hope to achieve when the NBRA meets with @TheNBAPA next month.” Assuming that meeting goes according to plan, both sides will have to work on rebuilding the trust and support of fans: Over the past 30 days, “NBA Referees” have a seven percent positive score on 30dB. –Alex Shultz
