Located in Brownsville, Tex., Case Padre is a former Wal-Mart redesigned to hold roughly 1,500 boys. It’s the largest of its kind in the United States and has mostly been shrouded in secrecy since it opened in March 2017. That finally changed last week when reporters were allowed to tour the facility (though they weren’t allowed to talk to children). The vast majority of the “residents” are kids who attempted to cross the U.S. border alone, but there has been a more recent influx of children taken from their parents as part of a Trump policy change that he continues to pin on Democrats. NBC News described Casa Padre as more “incarceration than temporary shelter,” noting that kids spend 22 hours a day locked inside during the week. (They’re granted a whole extra hour per day of outside time on the weekends.) Social has already had enough of the quasi-prison: Over the past three days, “Casa Padre” has a 19 percent positive score. –Alex Shultz
