One of my coworkers was in a hurry yesterday and got lost in the future. Don’t worry, she’s come back, as we always do. These bodies keep us tethered to a present as strong and lovingly relentless as any mother who ever lived. Her body brought her back with a sudden, painful tug.
She told me while we were wrapping her foot in ice and getting ready to go to the emergency room that she was just in such a hurry. She needed to reach something up high, and decided to use a swiveling, rolling chair because it was nearby, quick and well, she was in a hurry.
On the way to the hospital she told me laughing through intense pain:
As I was sitting there holding my foot and being angry and disappointed because now I wouldn’t be able to go visit my friends in Maryland. How could I? I won’t be able to drive! As I was sitting there with my foot throbbing I looked up and saw a ladder right next to me. It was there all along. I was just in too big a hurry.
I laughed with her, understanding the same predicament had happened so often to me when I had been rushing with my awareness, ahead of where my body was, ignoring the beautiful experience of the body itself. Instead, I had been caught up in thoughts of the future, and damaged this body by ignoring it.

Mind-breath practice: With your awareness in your body think one of the words below on the in-breath and out breath….. and then the next word …..repeat and continue until you feel calm and connection…..repeat during the day as often as you remember:
- trusting
- accepting
- one
