Trump has long expressed his displeasure about the agreement, which lifted sanctions Iran in exchange for Iran ceasing to develop nuclear weapons. From all indications, Iran has upheld its end of the bargain, but the Trump Administration believes the Iranian government is violating the “spirit” of the deal because of its alleged associations with extremist groups. Trump’s decertification wouldn’t technically end the arrangement, but it would set the stage for its demise or re-negotiation as Congress would have 60 days to decide whether to re-impose sanctions. The rest of the world is solidly against any potential U.S. withdrawal. As a European official told The Washington Post, “We will not follow the United States in reneging on our international obligations with this deal.” And Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said over the weekend, “The President is about to impose on himself and this country a dramatic self-inflicted wound” that could lead to Iran restarting its nuclear program.
