On Valentine’s Day, the deadliest shooting yet took place at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. Nikolas Cruz, 19, allegedly gunned down 17 people with an AR-15-style rifle. School shootings always shock and dismay Social, but this one has seen additional fallout since evidence emerged that the Federal Bureau of Investigation had Cruz on its radar and didn’t stop him. In September 2017, the FBI learned that Cruz was posting on social media about his dreams of becoming a “professional school shooter,” and in January the FBI received a tip from someone close to Cruz suggesting that he was a clear and present danger. That tip detailed Cruz’s disturbing behavior, threats, and even weapons he owned. Unfortunately, because of administrative errors, that tip did not reach the FBI’s Miami Field Office in time to prevent the shooting. Social media has ripped into the Bureau since the blunder was revealed, with the FBI getting 87 percent negative sentiment. Florida Governor Rick Scott has gone so far as to demand the resignation of FBI Director Christopher Wray, who has been on the job since last June. –Hugo Guzman
