Pope Francis was long ago anointed the “Cool Pope” for his relative progressivism, particularly regarding climate change and helping the poor. He has also expressed incrementally more open views on social issues, though he’s not exactly a full-fledged supporter of LGBTQ rights. Still, his recent meeting with a gay man—and that man’s retelling of their conversation—is being rehashed as a positive step for the Catholic Church. Juan Carlos Cruz, who was sexually abused by Chilean priest Fernando Karadima, spent three days with Pope Francis last month. They discussed his abuse, and Cruz told CNN he also brought up his own sexuality. Pope Francis was apparently supportive, saying: “God made you like this. God loves you like this. The Pope loves you like this and you should love yourself and not worry about what people say.” The Vatican isn’t confirming or denying Cruz’s account, but assuming it is true, Social is on board. Over the past day, “Pope Francis + Gay Man” has a 77 percent positive score. –Alex Shultz
