It spent most of last year hovering north of 70 percent negatives, and several federal courts, such as the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, which covers most of the West Coast, heard cases against the ban. Unfortunately for those hoping the courts would kill Trump’s policy, that isn’t going to happen. The Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that the President can enact such bans in the name of national security. The decision was 5-4, with one dissenting justice standing up against what she characterized as insulting comments by the President about Muslims. At Tuesday’s final hearing, Sonia Sotomayor read some of Trump’s past remarks, including one in which he claimed that “Islam hates us” and that Muslims coming to America have become a problem. “Take a brief moment,” Sotomayor said. “And let the gravity of those statements sink in.” Additionally, Sotomayor said that SCOTUS had failed to hold the President accountable for ignoring his legal commitments. Social might hate the travel ban, but it is applauding Sotomayor, giving her 61 percent positive opinions after Tuesday’s stand. –Hugo Guzman
