The National School Walkout movement was organized by the same activists behind the Women’s March earlier this year and survivors of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre in Parkland, Fla., last month. The protests were meant to push legislators to commemorate the students killed in Parkland and enact stricter gun control laws. The Twitter handle “#NationalWalkoutDay” gets 68 percent positives, and although most of the online crowd stands proudly in solidarity with the students, there are plenty of naysayers. Many of the 32 percent of social media users who disapprove of the walkouts instead supported another movement, “WalkupNOTout,” which seeks to bring students together and teach them to treat unpopular kids just as nicely as everyone else. Some have called that tactic victim-blaming, but schools wanting to let kids participate without encouraging them to skip school planned activities around it. –Hugo Guzman
