The U.S., in coordination with the UK and France, launched strikes against three facilities in the war-torn country on Friday as a response to another suspected chemical attack against Syrian civilians by the regime of Bashar al-Assad. Trump did not seek congressional approval for the military action, instead justifying it afterwards by saying it was necessary “to avert a worsening of the region’s current humanitarian catastrophe.” Some have argued that a potentially more helpful way to avert the humanitarian crisis would be to admit Syrian refugees, something that’s happened all of 11 times in 2018. As a frame of reference, 15,479 Syrians were resettled in America in 2016. Trump took to Twitter following the strikes to proclaim “Mission accomplished,” which led to more than a few jokes (and a defensive follow-up tweet from the President) since that was the premature phrase George W. Bush once used about the war in Iraq. Meanwhile, Russia, which has a heavy military presence in Syria and backs Assad , released a statement via the Russian ambassador to the U.S. warning that “we are being threatened. We warned that such actions will not be left without consequences.” Over the last two days, “Syria Strike” has an 18 percent positive score on Social. –Alex Shultz
