That would be Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who appointed Special Counsel Robert Mueller to oversee the Russia investigation after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself. Rosenstein is a Republican who was brought on by President Trump and overwhelmingly confirmed by the Senate last year, but he is apparently a main focus of an elusive and controversial memo crafted by House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.). According to The New York Times, the memo – which the House has voted to make public – asserts that Rosenstein asked for an extended surveillance warrant for Carter Page, which could indicate that the Justice Dept. thinks the former Trump campaign official may have been a Russian agent, Newsweek says. Republicans have decided that Rosenstein’s request might have been a step too far because it possibly relied on unverified information in the explosive Christopher Steele dossier, which was first funded by anti-Trump Republicans and later the Democratic National Committee. If Rosenstein were kicked to the curb – and some top Republicans are cautioning against that – his replacement could put the Mueller investigation on a tighter leash or even shut it down.
