The newest Supreme Court justice was appointed by President Trump after Republicans in Congress refused even to hold a hearing on Merrick Garland, President Obama’s nominee to fill Antonin Scalia’s old seat. Gorsuch, a constitutionalist much in the same mold as the late Scalia, has maintained the court’s right-leaning skew, and The New Yorker’s Jeffrey Toobin says Gorsuch has “dominated oral arguments” and “lectured his colleagues” in his short time on the bench. But this week, he got a little blowback from a SCOTUS veteran. When Gorsuch made a sarcastic quip that doubled as a veiled criticism of left-leaning judges during arguments in Gill vs. Whitford, an important gerrymandering case, 84-year-old Ruth Bader Ginsburg shot right back at him, citing a prior court decision directly refuting his point. According to Toobin, “Ginsburg’s comment seemed to silence Gorsuch for the rest of the arguments.” Over the last 30 days, Neil Gorsuch has a 32 percent positive score on Social. –Alex Shultz
