But in the past few weeks, it’s moved to the mainstream, especially because some big-name New York politicians have taken a stand on the issue. President Trump has allowed agents of ICE, which wasn’t even in existence until 2003, to detain undocumented immigrants in ways that were barred under the Obama Administration (though it should be noted that Obama deported more immigrants than any other president before him). New York democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s shocking upset victory in last week’s primary election was particularly useful to the abolish-ICE cause, which she made part of her platform. Over the weekend, protestors around the county railed against ICE and family separations, and they got the support of two potential 2020 candidates—Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.). New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said that ICE is “broken” and called for its end as well. Of course, President Trump weighed in on Twitter, writing: “The Democrats are making a strong push to abolish ICE, one of the smartest, toughest and most spirited law enforcement groups of men and women that I have ever seen. I have watched ICE liberate towns from the grasp of MS-13 & clean out the toughest of situations. They are great!” Over the last 14 days, ICE has a 27 percent positive score on Social. –Alex Shultz
