According to The Weekly Standard, White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney said at a Colorado conference on Sunday that House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) might be replaced with House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). Mulvaney said there is nothing personal. Rather, the plan is meant to force Democrats to either “put up or shut up” about whether they support Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) since Pelosi would presumably be in the running to reclaim the Speaker’s gavel should the Dems win control of the House in the Midterms. Republicans across the country have been smearing Democrat opponents by tying them to the deeply unpopular Pelosi. The scheme could have two serious speed bumps, however. First of all, Ryan is due to retire next year and has said that he plans to serve out his term. Then there is the fact that McCarthy denies ever talking with Mulvaney about replacing Ryan before he exits Capitol Hill for good. If that really is the case, maybe McCarthy should think about conferring with Mulvaney. McCarthy seriously outranks Ryan online, pulling 76 percent positives on 30dB vs. Ryan’s 22 percent. –Hugo Guzman
