Tony ‘Spider Pig’ Perkins Laying Mud Tracks Across the Religious Heights

, maybe if one sings this little ditty from the Simpson’s Movie enough times, one may come to believe in Spider Pigs and imagine these porkers rolling in mud before crawling on walls and ceilings depositing track marks and spinning their webs.

Likewise, maybe if Donald Trump and Republican Congressional leaders spout off that they only hire “the best and the brightest” enough times, one may come to see their picks for government jobs as the most qualified and talented leaders and swamp drainers ever to serve the people of the country.

As we have witnessed, however, Donald and other Republicans translate “the best” as the most ideologically far-right, and “the brightest” as ultra-conservative financial backers.

Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell, adds yet another Spider Pig to the administration by appointing Tony Perkins to the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom. Perkins currently heads the so-called Family Research Council, which the Southern Poverty Law Center defines as a hate group.

The mandate of The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom is to monitor and review reports of religious freedom violations throughout the world and to make policy recommendation to the President, Secretary of State, and Congress.

The Southern Poverty Law Center regards Perkins’ FRC:

“The FRC often makes false claims about the LGBT community based on discredited research and junk science. The intention is to denigrate LGBT people as the organization battles against same-sex marriage, hate crime laws, anti-bullying programs and the repeal of the military’s ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy.”

Right-wing ideologue, James C. Dobson, who previously founded Focus on the Family in 1977 — which today functions as the largest theocratic-right organization in the United States operating out of Colorado Springs, Colorado — also created the Family Research Council in 1981. It has developed into a major influential theocratic-right organization campaigning for so-called “traditional family values” as FRC sees it.

In the face of Internal Revenue Service investigations of FRC’s overt lobbying activities, FRC administratively separated from FOF in 1992 to become an independent organization. Gary Bauer took over the helm as first president until 2003 when Tony Perkins succeeded him.

FRC takes virtually identical theocratic-right positions as its “parent” organization, FOF.

Perkins has argued that “Homosexual men are more likely to abuse children than straight men,” that “homosexual misconduct” in the military will increase without the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, and on Elena Kagan’s nomination to the Supreme Court:

“We do not need a justice on the Supreme Court who sees it as her life mission to write the homosexual version of Roe v. Wade by striking down one-man, one-woman marriage across America.”

As stated by Right Wing Watch:

“FRC and its Religious Right allies warmly embrace the world’s most religiously repressive regimes while they work together to oppose international recognition for the rights of LGBTQ people and to enshrine ‘traditional’ views of gender, marriage and family.”

So now, from his high wall and ceiling web, Tony Perkins will peer down across the globe to monitor violations of religious freedom. The Spider Pig will now guard the slop house, and thus, we can all look forward to a good old-fashioned romp in the mud.

“Here’s the thing about The Good Men Project. We are trying to create big, sweeping, societal changes—–overturn stereotypes, eliminate racism, sexism, homophobia, be a positive force for good for things like education reform and the environment. And we’re also giving individuals the tools they need to make individual change—-with their own relationships, with the way they parent, with their ability to be more conscious, more mindful, and more insightful. For some people, that could get overwhelming. But for those of us here at The Good Men Project, it is not overwhelming. It is simply something we do—–every day. We do it with teamwork, with compassion, with an understanding of systems and how they work, and with shared insights from a diversity of viewpoints.” —– Lisa Hickey, Publisher of The Good Men Project and CEO of Good Men Media Inc.
