Jessica Soukup had come out as trans to herself and was out in almost all aspects of her life – except, that is, for work. When she initially came out to her boss with a handwritten letter, she was welcomed with open arms. Shortly after she began showing up to work authentically, she was thrust before an audience of over 500 colleagues, where her name and image were broadcast for all to see. Here again, she was warmly received and encouraged.
The final step came one day when her colleague, with whom she was going to give a presentation on trans-inclusivity in the workplace, called in sick. At the last second, she decided that, as a newly out trans woman, it only made sense for her to deliver the presentation herself. What would normally be a modest crowd of 20 or so people was instead a full – and overflowing – audience, all of whom showed up to support her.
