The Russian president has long denied interfering in the 2016 U.S. election, which Trump has generally accepted at face value. During POTUS’s trip across Asia, he got a few minutes with Putin, and that was enough for him to tell reporters over the weekend: “Every time [Putin] sees me he says, ‘I didn’t do that,’ and I really believe that when he tells me that, he means it … I think he is very insulted by it, which is not a good thing for our country.” Trump also referred to former leaders of the intelligence community (some of whom have been critical of Trump) as “political hacks.” Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) immediately called out Trump for his remarks, writing: “There’s nothing ‘America First’ about taking the word of a KGB colonel over that of the American intelligence community.” A day later, Trump backtracked a bit, saying that he does actually believe Russians interfered in the election because he’s “with our agencies, especially as currently constituted.” Over the last day, “Trump + Putin + Election” has a 29 percent positive score on Social. –Alex Shultz
