Fulfillment, freedom, and prosperity for all was the promise of our technological age. But we haven’t come close to its actualization. Instead, the fog of manufactured complexity clouds our minds with a pop culture hypnosis from flickering screens.
We are continually distracted from the truth of things by addictive, mind-numbing entertainments and the current reality show chaos that is the Trumpian style of governance.
The truth of things in our modern era is that a staggering one half of the global wealth is owned by the top 1% of our species. This is insane.
We don’t seem to think about the truth of things very much. The reality of our global situation is something shrouded within a general foreboding we all share. An overall but ill-defined disquiet churns in the dark corners of our collective psyche like a vagabond bugaboo roaming the shadows. But, thanks to the fruits of our modern age, we can calm our vague unease within the comfort of our Lean Cuisine, Netflix, Xbox, and playing with our vehicle backup cameras that show us where we have been.
Because we entangle ourselves in contrived distractions, we ignore the powerful few at the top of the economic food chain who continue to prosper by our sweat. They are gobbling up and devastating our planet while we blindly yell at each other across the ideological spectrum and focus on the antics of our emotionally stunted president. They corral our scrutiny through their governing proxies that we elect but they pay for.
Those few men at the top keep us preoccupied with fearful, made-up stories about how half the country is trying to take everything away from the other half and how bad hombres from foreign lands are infiltrating our neighborhoods and stalking our daughters.
It’s no surprise our governing structures that support this insane wealth disparity have become a mass-market magic act. Whether it’s presidential adultery with skin hustlers, the encroaching manufactured menace of immigration, or tweet-driven statecraft, we are sidetracked from recognizing the lunatic hoarding of resources by those perversely rich.
The wall has already been built. And it protects those exalted few. And this is done with our uninformed permission as we lose ourselves in the smoke and mirrors created at the behest of those very powerful.
Although some might disagree, we are not trapped in an Orwellian dystopia…not yet. But we are at a very important crossroads of choice. And it can go either way.
We can blindly choose to support the wealthiest among us, to allow the 1% to continue hoarding and consuming the riches of our world. We can choose to keep those in power who protect the 1% by promoting fear, nationalistic isolationism, xenophobia, misogyny, and the rest of the dystopian playlist. We make this choice by persistently voting in uninspired and uninspiring fear mongers who are owned by the wealthiest few, or by not voting at all.
This choice empowers the chaos and keeps the great disparity of wealth in place. This is what the 1% want us to choose.
This choice for fear is a ticking clock, counting down to something too incomprehensible to even think about. And it is our children and theirs who will bear the brunt of this absurd timetable of unrestrained consumption.
Our other choice is to vote for leaders who hold a broader, more global view of healing, promoting we the people’s peace, wellbeing, and our planetary home’s wholeness. We can vote for leaders with the will to take the massive dollars out of politics and seek for a more balanced economic approach to growth and sustainability.
How wondrous it would be to have people running our government who work towards the manifestation of the potential of we the people instead of for their own wealth and power on behalf of the topmost tier!
The bigger truth of things is that we are Earthlings first before we are Americans. And the rest of humanity are Earthlings as well. And that idea of global identity needs to be central to our planning and who we choose for our leadership if we desire greater balance and healing for our world and a future for our babies and grandbabies.
We are one people of shared breath, intimately related to the entirety of the biosphere that sustains us. And anything that we do anywhere in our collective world will impact us, despite any silly walls we may build to try to keep the nightmares out. And this is a good space to lead from.
As a countermeasure to fear, a greater love can be brought into the mix if we have the will to make it so. We can choose to put visionaries into leadership positions, who carry a greater dream for we the people and our children’s future. Economical hoarding is insane and destructive. It’s time to bring in people who can begin restoring the original promise of this technological age. It’s time to engage our democracy with wisdom! Let’s vote and vote skillfully while we can!
