The conservative Kavanaugh faces a tough Senate confirmation battle even though the too-good-to-be-true way he presented himself to the public recalled the lyrics of a Bye, Bye Birdie song: “He’s as decent as a minister! He’s as sober as a judge! He subscribes to ev’ry charity! And his hobby’s making fudge!” Kavanaugh has been a part of major Republican political battles going back to the 90s and has said that only Congress should be able to hold presidents accountable to the law while in office. Republicans cannot afford to lose even a single vote for his confirmation—assuming all Democrats vote “nay”—and already two GOP senators look iffy. The split on Twitter is almost even, with 51 percent favoring Kavanaugh’s nomination and 49 percent standing against it. Because of Kavanaugh’s rich history of decisions, there is a long paper trail for the Senate to consider, so there seems to be plenty of time for online opinions to tip in either direction. –Hugo Guzman
