Schmidt is an MSNBC commentator and has long been critical of President Trump, but the White House directive to separate children from parents at the southern border was the last straw. Schmidt explained his decision in a series of tweets, one of which read: “29 years and nine months ago I registered to vote and became a member of The Republican Party which was founded in 1854 to oppose slavery and stand for the dignity of human life. Today I renounce my membership in the Republican Party. It is fully the party of Trump.” He was also critical of congressional Republicans, whom he feels haven’t done enough to challenge POTUS. In ensuing interviews, Schmidt added that he isn’t switching to the Democratic Party—he’ll register as an independent—but that he’s supporting a blue wave come the Midterms in November. Conservatives, including Fox News talking head Laura Ingraham, blasted the move. She referred to Schmidt as a “perpetually losing GOP consultant.” Famously, Schmidt was one of the main drivers behind McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin as his vice-presidential choice—a move many argue helped usher in a new era of unhinged conservative candidates. But Schmidt is, on the whole, receiving overwhelming support of late: Over the past two days, his Twitter handle @SteveSchmidtSES has a 77 percent positive score. –Alex Shultz
