That presidential primary race is likely to feature a wide swath of candidates ranging from moderates to progressives, and it’s nearly impossible to predict who will ultimately emerge to take on a wounded Trump (presuming he runs again). For the time being, polls point to former Vice-President Joe Biden, who has name recognition and some public feuds against Trump on his side. The data is sparse, but in January, Biden had an 11-point edge over his closest challenger, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont. Of course, that poll was taken during Oprah mania, when she picked up 13 percent of respondents (tied with Hillary Clinton, who almost certainly won’t be running again). Last weekend, Biden acknowledged the early returns look good for him, but told Rev. Al Sharpton on MSNBC that if he were offered the nomination today, he would turn it down. Still, he hasn’t dismissed the possibility of changing his mind and added that he would make a final decision “by the end of this year.” If he were elected, Biden would be 78 years old on Inauguration Day, and his views aren’t exactly trending leftward with the rest of the party. But those are just polling numbers. On Twitter, over the past 90 days, the hashtag @JoeBiden has a 47 percent positive score compared to 52 percent positive for @SenSanders — both solid by standards for pols but not exactly Barack Obama circa-2008. –Alex Shultz
