Recent high school grad Christian Bales was due to deliver his valedictorian speech before nearly 100 of his classmates at Holy Cross High School in Covington, Ky., but the morning of graduation he was informed that the speech had missed some important approval deadlines. When he investigated further, the truth was revealed. It turns out the Catholic Diocese of Covington considered the speech “too political” and confrontational, according to The New York Times. Bales, who is openly gay and gender non-conforming, also highlighted the gun-control activism of some fellow students and the anti-abortion activism of others. “The inherent flaw in [the mantra ‘the young people will win’],” Bales said, “is that it erases the truth that we’re all attempting to perpetuate God’s will by bettering the quality of life for those around us.” He ended up delivering the speech via bullhorn on the school’s front lawn, while social media users cheered him on with 74 percent positive opinions. The irony wasn’t lost on Bales’ mother, Gillian Marksberry. “The irony of it all is the diocese made this decision with the intention of taking away their voice, and as a result, it has made his voice that much louder,” she told CNN. –Hugo Guzman
