After a trip to France last year, the President got a look at the country’s military in full marching formation for Bastille Day celebrations. Now, he’s ordered a Pentagon parade for Washington, but not everyone is breaking out the pom-poms. Some have slammed the idea of displaying military might as tacky and insensitive, especially in a country where thousands of vets are homeless. The idea has even been mocked by military heroes, such ex-Navy SEAL Robert O’Neill. Widely believed to be the man who killed Osama Bin Laden during the 2011 raid on his hideout in Pakistan, O’Neill wrote on Twitter that the U.S. is above such self-aggrandizement. “We prepare. We deter. We fight,” O’Neill wrote on Feb. 8. “Stop this conversation.” Social agrees, giving the idea 60 percent negative sentiments and reminding anyone who will listen that the parade will cost millions of dollars. The last parade, held in 1991, was just after the Gulf War that liberated Kuwait. It cost $8 million, and estimates for a show of force today run far higher. –Hugo Guzman
