Pro surfer Mick Fanning takes on a shark during J Bay surf competition on Sunday… and wins.
If you were one of the lucky (or unlucky?) ones watching the WSL Live from South Afrika, you may not have known what you were looking at when top five pro surfer Mick Fanning suddenly noticed a fin behind him… and then a thrashing tail. Yes, a shark.
Every surfer’s nightmare.
According to Fanning’s interview after, the shark was tangled in his leash (attached from the board to your ankle) and thrashing around. Fanning jumps off his board and swims powerfully away from the shark, realizing the predator may be stuck. At some point, Fanning punched the shark in the back to get away. But not before he got hit in the face by the shark.
The competition today is cancelled.
There’s also a great interview (still looking for a link) with Fanning where Peter Mel, interviewing him soon after, says, “I just want to give you a hug!”
So do we, Mick! You rock, and we’re glad you’re okay!
And hats off to Julian Wilson who headed straight to Mick to help him, when he realized his fellow competitor was in shark-infested waters with no board.
