At Friday’s opening ceremony in Pyeongchang, luger Erin Hamlin led the American athletes as the official flag bearer, but Davis, who is a more decorated Olympian and was the first black athlete to win a gold medal at the Winter Games, believed the pole should have been in his hands. In a vote to decide who would get the honor, Hamlin and Davis tied 4-4. A coin toss ensued, which Davis lost. He ended up skipping the opening ceremony entirely and tweeted: “I am an American and when I won the 1000m in 2010 I became the first American to 2-peat in that event. @TeamUSA dishonorably tossed a coin to decide its 2018 flag bearer. No problem. I can wait until 2022. #BlackHistoryMonth2018 #PyeongChang2018.” Davis’s complaining quickly drew criticism, and he withdrew from social media by making his tweets private. He’s scheduled to participate in three events — the 1000m, 1500m, and 5000m. The first of those three, the 1500m, is set for this week. Over the past three days, “Shani Davis” has a 27 percent positive score on Social. –Alex Shultz
