The Yankees got off to a ho-hum 9-9 start but have been on an absolute tear of late, going 17-1 since April 21. They’re leading the league in runs per game (5.81) and have the second-most homers (51). Outfielder Aaron Judge has been nothing short of spectacular, as has the surprisingly successful shortstop Didi Gregorius. Considering star outfielder Giancarlo Stanton is batting only .237 thus far, the Yankees’ lineup might become even more potent as the season goes on. One game behind the 26-10 Yankees are the 25-11 Boston Red Sox, who began 2018 with a similar 17-2 run but have since fallen back to Earth a bit. Boston has the highest cumulative batting average at .270, thanks in large part to outfielder J.D. Martinez (hitting .351), outfielder Mookie Betts (.347), and first baseman Mitch Moreland (.342). Starting pitcher Chris Sale has also been impressive and is third in the American League with a 2.02 ERA. While New York has a slim advantage in the standings, over the past 30 days on Twitter, the handle @RedSox has a 67 percent positive score, compared with 65 percent for @Yankees. –Alex Shultz
