Matthew describes the commitment between his parents as “very, very real.”
12-year-old Matthew Lannon, whose two moms have been together for 14 years, made a profound speech about same-sex marriage before the Rhode Island Senate judiciary committee on Thursday. He said,
There’s one thing in life that you don’t mess with, and that’s love. My parents and all the other gay and lesbian parents here just want to be happy like you. All they want is to be treated fairly. And unlike most of you, they have to come here year after year and explain over and over again why their love is equal to yours. This year, you have the opportunity to change that. I say, choose love.
Although LGBT couples have the option of civil unions, Rhode Island is the only state in New England that does not allow same-sex marriage.
