A Real-Life Star Trek Enterprise – That Actually Flies?!

Star Trek fans, sit down. TheWeek.com has big news:

“…the future of space travel is in the hands of people with big imaginations. And nobody’s vision is quite as ambitious as one engineer who has outlined an elaborate plan to build Star Trek‘s USS Enterprise, which he says could be ready to fly within the next 20 years. “We have the technological reach to build the first generation of the spaceship… so let’s do it,” writes BTE Dan on his website, BuildTheEnterprise.org

“He wants to build a fully working version of the iconic spacecraft by the year 2032. The proposal calls for a ‘full-sized, ion-powered version of the Enterprise complete with 1G of gravity on board,’ says Universe Today.”

“The Gen1 would run on nuclear power, and keep travelers’ feet planted to the ground using a constantly rotating gravity-wheel to generate 1G of gravitational force.”

While I’m not sure I have a ton of confidence in a fella calling himself “BTE Dan”, people seem to be taking him quite seriously. Apparently his plans are very thorough and he’s an electrical engineer at “a Fortune 500 Company.” Dude is obviously crazy smart.

The bad news? The real-life USS Enterprise will not be able to fly at warp speed. Sorry, no traveling at the speed of light in this century.

But do make sure you check out BTE Dan’s video describing how the Gravity Wheel will work:

P.S. Is anyone else thinking that this BTE Dan might be just the guy we need to solve the energy crisis as opposed to, oh say… I don’t know, building the actual real-lie USS Enterprise?

The lead photo to this story is actually of a Star Trek Enterprise Pizza Cutter. Which, for the record, does not fly, but is very cool.
