Urban sprawl is colliding with wildlands and the result is an unprecedented loss of life and property due to fire. This Weather Channel documentary tells the human story.
Charred trees and frequent wildfires. These were two of the major differences I noticed when I left my home in Pennsylvania and moved to the deserts of Arizona. I thought it was common to see billowing smoke from Arizona mountaintops, even the locals seemed to take it all in stride. Though vast areas of mountain are still open to hikers, I remember thinking about how it felt like I was walking not through a forest of trees, but a forest of shadows. The following documentary makes it clear that while these fires have always been common in the Southwest, they’ve never been this deadly. The fires are burning faster, lasting longer and causing an amount of human and property damage never before seen. The reason is a mix of human and environmental factors.
