Buzzfeed, Buzzfeed, Buzzfeed.
You warned me. You said it three times. You told me that you were about to show me pictures of frozen, cooked and diced genitals… You told me turn back… And I didn’t. I ignored your advice. Now I want to throw up. Or gouge out my own eyeballs. Or both.
Apparently this is true. A chef, Mao Sugiyama, who identifies as asexual, went in for surgery to have his penis and testicles removed. I’m cool with that, if that’s your thing. I hope you’ve thought long and hard about it and sought some support from experts, but if after all that you’ve decided you’d be better off without genitals I’m all for it. Your body, your decision.
But to make “art” out of it—cook and serve it—I mean, really?? Really, friend? I’m worried.
And to all of you reading this, be warned. there is nothing subtle happening in the photographs Buzzfeed is offering. So listen to their warnings, or prepare to completely freak the F out like I just did.
What do you think? Am I overreacting?
What do you think Mao Sugiyama is trying to say with this form of artistic expression?

His call, at least it worked out better than the guy in Germany. I have to say I’m curious about how they tasted.
WTF!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!
This guy is nuts! Or maybe not anymore….
My grandmother from Texas had a folksy expression for every situation. She used to watch the 6 o’clock news, shake her head, and remark that the world was going to hell in a hand basket. For some reason that popped into my head just now.
O-M-G Justin. I am dying laughing.
The real tragedy here is that the food was panned by critics as “leathery,” “glutinous,” and basically inedible. You don’t get a second chance to make a good first impression… of your surgically removed and cooked genitals.
Well I am officially disturbed now. Thank-you 😛
Why remove the testes though, now he needs testosterone injections for the rest of his life?
Does he? I don’t think transwomen get T gel, in fact don’t they take androgen blockers specifically to combat it?
From what I know of hormones, I believe you need testosterone production in some form or you face various health issues. I could be wrong though.
I’m not a doctor, either, but I believe you need either one or the other of the major sex hormones to facilitate bone production. It isn’t hard to imagine Sugiyama choosing hir hormone regimen (or lack of one) for reasons other than optimal bone health.
Testosterone is produced in small quantities by the adrenal glands, as is estrogen. That’s why women have a basal level of testosterone, and men have a basal level of estrogen
Is it enough for a born-male to survive on? Keep systems running? I knew we had both sex hormones but afaik our dominant one is much higher, I’m wondering if it needs to remain somewhat high for bodily function. One area he might have trouble with is body hair and muscle production?
There have been eunuchs, hijras, and the like for much of recorded history. I don’t know of studies of lifespan or health issues on any of these populations, but it seems you can live without them.
Also, I know we’re drawing a lot of parallels to trans women in this discussion, but may I point out that while orchiectomy is fairly common for trans women to undergo, penectomy is not. Buy me a beer and I’ll draw you pictures of vaginoplasty on cocktail napkins. I gave the presentation once to a group of trans women and they were fascinated. Many had no idea how it is done, hadn’t considered they’d ever be able to afford it and so had no reason to think of it.
Saw a doco on it I think once, basically cutting a sleeve, putting the glans where the clitoris should be or something.
I know there are health issues when people produce NO testosterone, etc, wasn’t sure if low amounts were ok though.
I believe he will be at risk of developing osteoporosis and possibly other problems.
Yeah, I think the chef here makes a specific point that he’s not a transwoman, but rather an “asexual” person, which I’d never heard of in regards to genitalia, but of course as I said in the piece, it’s his (is there an asexual pronoun?) body and if he wants to be “none of the above” I’m all for it.
