Good news just keeps coming!
According to CNN, Colin Powell is speaking publicly about his support of same-sex marriage:
The former secretary of state was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff when the military “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” position was implemented.
“It was the Congress that imposed ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ it was certainly my position, my recommendation to get us out of an even worse outcome that could have occurred,” Powell told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, recalling former President Bill Clinton’s support of overturning a ban on military service for gay individuals. After public opposition, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” was seen as a compromise.
It was his relationships with friends who have stable families and relationships that helped him to understand that there is no reason for those friends not to be allowed to get married.
This is the third of these I’ve written in recent weeks—VP Joe Biden being the first, President Obama being the second and now former Secretary of State—and my feeling is that it won’t be the last.
One day I sincerely hope that we won’t find this support to be exceptional enough to even make a blog post about it. One day I hope that same-sex families will just a part of the fabric of our world.
Way to go, Sir!
Man, I’m old. I remember back when Colin Powell was a respected statesman and possible Presidential candidate. Oh well, at least he’s doing some good by acknowledging the obvious–which is more than he did in office.
I definitely see more government officials and organizations supporting marriage equality. It’s important to be vocal.
Why not follow Canada’s lead? They have legalized BOTH SS and plural marriage, all consenting adults.
At least currently in the US living with a SS person is not a crime. They can live together in peace without harrassment by the government. By contrast, if a man or woman even lives with a second person unmarried and says that they are their husband or wife, they can and do get arrested and charged with a felony. Even if they aren’t still living with the first spouse they can still be arrested and charged with a felony. How crazy is that?
