Dr. Daniel Goleman, who authored the groundbreaking mega-best-seller book Emotional Intelligence, explains why he believes we are not more compassionate most of the time.
Since the publication of Emotional Intelligence in 1995, there have been numerous conferences and academic institutes created which are dedicated to the idea that”EI” is an “alternative to more traditional measures of IQ.” EI is now taught in public schools, and has been integrated into corporate leadership as “a new way of thinking about success.”
Goleman even asserts that emotional intelligence, and a person’s “EIQ” help explain “why some ‘average’ people are incredibly successful, while ‘geniuses’ sometimes fail to live up to their promise.”

Is emotional intelligence separate from a person’s IQ? And if so, does it really play such an important role in determining success?
Is there zero correlation between IQ (intelligence) and EQ (emotional awareness)? I think it would be generally true to state that there may be no positive correlation. One could probably safely say that an increase in intelligence does not automatically indicate an increase in emotional awareness or compassion. In fact, it has been my experience, working with a group of highly intelligent engineers in the aerospace design field, that the opposite might be true. There may be a negative correlation between intelligence and emotional awareness. Success is often more a result of a group effort rather than an individual effort.… Read more »
