For a while it looked like the Republicans would nominate a man who was criticized for being to effective a capitalist–and in fact too rich. But yesterday the tide turned in the favor of Newt Gingrich, whose been married three times. He left his first wife when she was sick with cancer and new revelations from his second wife indicate he asked her to have an open marriage.
We here at the Good Men Project certainly have explored men and marriage in all its possible permutations–gay marriage, open marriage, divorce, swingers among other things. So we applaud Newt’s open mindedness on these issues. We (okay this is just Tom again running his mouth again) just wonder how all that open minded behavior squares with the idea that marriage is narrowly defined as a sacred bond between a man and a women, doesn’t include a woman’s right to choose, and should never include gays, divorce, or other supposed “aberrations” from Biblical standards?
If the litmus test for Republicans is a candidate who articulates family values as the centerpiece of their platform can Gingrich really be that guy?

I think that this sort of double-standard is just indicative of what happens far too often on The Right (and to be fair, on The Left as well). The sins that we understand are the ones that aren’t as bad. To a man who has never looked at another man and thought he had a nice ass, then marriage can never extend to homosexuals. To a man who has never looked at a woman not his wife and thought she had a nice ass, then divorce/ cheating can be completely condemned. Just so happens that no man has ever had… Read more »
I hope you’re kidding when you said you applaud Newt’s open mindedness on those issues. 😀 Newt wasn’t being “open minded”, he was just being a selfish asshole. Anyhow I don’t think his win signifies anything in particular about the Republicans’ obsession with family values. It may force them to shut up about it for a little while, but even most Republicans (according to polls) think Newt is a bad person. He’s just more politically conservative than Romney, and the hardcore Republican base doesn’t like Romney. Romney’s a Mormon, and a moderate who pandered to Massachusetts liberals, and he doesn’t… Read more »
