The Good Men Project

Every Man Should Cook Dinner!

It started almost fifteen year ago now when I had two little kids for long stretches on my own. I had to cook food they would eat. I drew on the skills instilled in me as a teenager when my mom made each of us cook dinner one night a week.

I invented some of my own recipes (unhealthy but good) like cooking bacon and then cooking French toast right in the grease topping it off with cinnamon sugar. All before nursery school.

Over the years I have refined my cooking skills and still do a lot of shopping and cooking even after being remarried now for almost a decade.

Of course a good man doesn’t need to cook but here are ten things to consider as a man with a stove:

Next: Get Prepared

 1. Shopping is a really fun thing to do with kids.It also insures you get the stuff you really want.

Next: Food Can Equal Sex

2. Cooking doesn’t guarantee an increase in your spouse’s sexual appetite but it can’t hurt right?

Next: Go Natural

 3) It’s all about ingredients.

Buy great produce and meat and pretty much nothing else matters.

Next: Throw Out the Cookbook

4) Don’t use a recipe. See #3.

Next: Grill Baby, Grill!

5) A grill is a man’s best friend.

Even when I lived in a city apartment with a small deck, I grilled in the snow.

Next: Cook What You Love

 6) Like shopping, doing the cooking means you get to make what you want how you want it.

Next: Don’t Get Fancy

7) Keep it simple.  Kids generally don’t like spice.  Or sauce.  They like a great piece of fish or chicken or steak and fresh vegetables.

Next: Foreman Was More Than a Boxer

8. The George Forman grill is perhaps the greatest invention since the lightbulb.  If you don’t have one, get one and use it every day.

Next: Single Guys, Listen the F#*! Up

9) If you are a single guy, cooking dinner for your date is the way to her heart.  See #s 3,4,5 above.

Next: The Chicken or the Egg?

10) Bake with your kids.  Pancakes are a favorite in our house. But just about anything involving cracking eggs is a big hit.
