I am really hoping this has nothing to do with our ongoing discussion of men losing their balls this week. CNN is reporting that Catherine Kieu Becker drugged her husband, then roped him to their bed and cut off his penis. She proceeded to take the member and throw it into the couple’s garbage disposal to make sure there would be no chance he would get his manhood back. The couple, who live in Southern California, had been going through a divorce. He was rushed to the hospital and she was taken to Orange County Jail after admitting that she did the deed and that she felt, “he deserved it.”
Commentary around the web has been heated, with the story on the top of most of the news websites. Men are outraged, some women asking whether the woman in question was abused. A doctor even volunteered on the CNN site that perhaps the husband might be able to use a finger to replace his lost member.
Kidding aside, this is one more case that shows just how violent the animosity between the genders has become. Domestic violence in both directions is an issue that gets too often swept under the rug. But the assumption seems quite often that when a women beats a man (think Tiger Woods) that he deserves it. In a world where sexism is still alive and well, where men continue to have had the reigns on the top spots, and women might feel men don’t understand their plight, there is a sisterhood thing that sometimes happen when a woman fights back.
But can we just all agree that Ms. Becker went just a tad too far? Even a guy looking for his balls, like me, doesn’t really want them cut off anytime soon.
This isn’t about a woman “fighting back”. It’s outrageous to say that. If anyone was suffering from domestic violence in that marriage, we should assume it was the husband.
It doesn’t make it a “gender war” when a woman attacks a man. It’s very unusual. What’s much more common is that men attack women, but we don’t call that a gender war unless we’re being radical feminists.
It appears that you all seem to be missing the point. Based on the current operating patriarchal power structure that our Society is based on, it wouldn’t have to be a reverse scenario because men do horrendous things to women and children every single day. While what happened was totally heinous in this case, it is also not hard to imagine why a woman (who MAY have been abused-even though that is presumptuous) would go to this extreme. Fully step out of your privilege zone and maybe you will get a clue as to why this scenario is treated differently…
Based on the current operating patriarchal power structure that our Society is based on, it wouldn’t have to be a reverse scenario because men do horrendous things to women and children every single day. Yet most people are able to treat them like the serious events that they are and not joke about them. Even people who regularly say they take domestic violence like seriously will then turn around and act as if female against male violence is not that big of a deal. Yes there are people who don’t give a free pass on male against female violence. But… Read more »
Patriarchal? My, how well you quote what they taught you in gender studies class, or their media… Sexism goes mostly one way – anti-male – thousands of double standards. Women still have the luxury of choosing to not take those top spots/jobs which require more commitment, much more risk, more back breaking labor, or just far more time than they chose to commit. Women have a choice while men are just expected to buck-up, man-up and take those risks and do the sh.t work, long hours or risk their lives to support the women who have a choice to bypass… Read more »
@LMO85,
Try reading to books to clear up that patriarchy misconception (propaganda):
by Warren Farrell:
1- The myth of male power
2- WHY men earn more (they do all the crap work and long hours – FOR women)
@LMO85, Yes, men DO make more money, but only because they are forced and expected to “man-up” and do so (no choices for men – just do or die…) , to sacrifice, give their best, give their all, FOR WOMEN. It is shown in govt studies that women spend 70% of total (male + female) income. One recent radio ad quoted a more recent govt survey showing women spend 75% of both genders’ total income, and thus this is why advertisers were advised in that ad to target women with their advertising dollars since women spend most of the money… Read more »
Corrections: women spend 70% or 75% of DISPOSABLE male + female income (after essential survival bills are paid).
Have you ever just happened to notice how many more ads are aimed at women than men as potential buyers??? Reality (truth) is why, not because “women are oppressed” or because “women have the least money to spend.”
Why don’t they teach any of this in gender studies “classes,” or in their “media” or in their “justice” system which this article clearly reflects in true colors?
You’re right. Men chop off woman’s wieners all the time. In fact, last weekend I was going to make love to a lady, and she didn’t even have a schlong – what are the odds!
Tom, The question “…asking whether the woman in question was abused” is only asked when the man is abused, but never when a woman is abused, most of which are abused for being abusive (well documented in many studies) 2/3 of DV injured women are the result of the woman being the primary and initiating abuser…, but excused – yes, there IS and excuse for abuse, on one side only.). “…this is one more case that shows just how violent the animosity between the genders has become.” there’s no “between about it – this is unilateral war, assisted by “good… Read more »
Imagine how different the news coverage (and public outrage) would be if the genders were reversed and he’d cut off something of hers…
A reflection of our sick sad world.
Reminds me of how well that story about the two girls that held a boy down and stripped his clothes off of him in public in broad daylight while a third person recorded. The one where the police actually said that it wasn’t worth pursuing serious charges over.
People often say that violence against women is tolerated but when its turned around suddenly people are concerned. Like Jake and Daddy files say would Tom had written light hearted post like this about a man comitting genital mutiluation against against a woman? (And personally I don’t think there would be as any “she must have been abusing him so he just did what he had to do to get away” talk. There would still be some but not as much.) and I would really like to see O’Brian/Kimmel/etc… make a joke about a woman’s genitals being mutilated by a… Read more »
Tom, I like to see how you would handle a male drugging then cutting the clitoris from a female and throwing it in the garbage disposal in a society that assumes that she deserved it. Would it be with the same humour?
Also, do you have a citation for DV against women being swept under the rug?
I have to admit, Jake has a point. Hell, I still remember a handful of Lorena Bobbit jokes. While acknowledging it was awful what she did, it was also fodder for comedians for years. Something flippant and trivial, despite the fact that he had his genitals mutilated. Now flip that and say we’re talking about a woman. There would be no joking. No late night hosts including it in their opening monologues. If you dared joke about a man removing the clitoris of a woman you’d be looked at like a monster. Yet crack a “cutting your dick off” joke… Read more »
Oh you mean like the millions of women in fundamentalist Muslim countries who get ignored everyday … while next to nothing is being done to stop this vile practice…
… again no one would dare joke about that either. Please stop with the “B-B-But women have it so much worse” retort. What this lady did was disgusting and shouldn’t be trivialized nor used as a punch line.
Find some footage of a mainstream talk show panel of 4-7 men where they openly joke about and make fun of such women. Because Sharon Osbourne was so particularly vile on that episode find a male celebrity that would call that treatment of Muslim women “fabulous” (or some equivalent like awesome or something). And also include a point in which one of the men on this panel would bring up the double standard someone would follow with saying its different because “one is floppy” (or some equivalent “excuse” for why one is worse than the other).
So there aren’t multinational organizations working against FGM, and media coverage as well? Find one person here who hasn’t heard of it.
YIKES! As a woman who was severely abused by her ex husband, who turned out to not only be a woman beating asshole but also a child rapist & dead beat sperm donor…I have to say this is QUITE DISTURBING! There really are MUCH better ways to go about exacting ‘revenge’ against someone, without putting your own freedom at stake! But then again, maybe I just have a conscious and am MUCH more evil than to just chop a man’s dick off.
Exactly right – she is only “putting her freedom at stake” (and will probably walk, with a book deal and becoming a celebrity on all the PC man-hate talk shows… a heroine) while a man doing this would loose his freedom for sure.
You can be sure of one thing, Dr. Phil(anderer) and the likes will worship her.
This woman is clearly disturbed (that’s an understatement) and I expect she is psychotic, has a severe personality disorder (antisocial, narcissistic, borderline) and/or is a heavy drug user (probably meth). Or most likely all 3. Domestic abuse, assuming there was any, has nothing to do with a heinous act like this.
A tad? This crazy nutcase of a woman drugged her husband and cut of his dick. It wasn’t even a crime of passion since the drugging points to premeditated. This woman should go to prison regardless of whether or not she was abused.
“A tad too far” is gross understatement. A human being was drugged and mutilated. There is no excuse.
