Car Thief Teaches Victims a Lesson in Childrearing

Gene Weingarten won a Pulitzer for writing about the criminal and fatal repercussions of forgetting a child in the backseat of a car. Why someone would purposely do that, I have no idea—especially when there’s a moralistic homeless guy hiding nearby.

In Houston, a homeless man found a running car, jumped into the front seat, and took it for a quick spin. After realizing there was a toddler inside, he came back a few minutes later to return the car and the kid. He found the mother and her boyfriend, scolded them for leaving the boy unattended, and then ran away.

The 22-year-old woman said she left her 2-year-old son in the car so she could go help her boyfriend carry some fishing supplies back to the car.

Authorities are not pressing charges against the couple, and there’s no word on the location of the homeless man.
