People have been seeing the pop-ups asking to subscribe, and our soft-roll out of our Premium Membership model. And to some people, this strikes a note of fear. As one fan on Twitter exclaimed worriedly, “Horrible idea! Closed community is exactly what you don’t need to spread the word.”
For the record: WE AGREE. We are an open community. We invite everyone to participate in the conversation. For free – if that is what you want. We do not want to be having the only worldwide conversation about what it means to be a good man in the 21st century and leave anyone out.
But we do have to keep the lights on and the servers working. And what we really want most is for you, our community, to have the chance to decide on the experience you want.
So if you want a traditional type of media company, where advertising pays the bills so you can enjoy your content free of charge – you got it. And if you find the ads annoying and distracting and simply want to enjoy the content – well, you’ve got that too. Pay a small amount of money and the ads go away.
And once people get the “Aha!”, they quite like what we are doing.
Not only that, here is an observation from commenter stromdal:
I don’t really care much either way about the extras but I will pay for membership – simply because I find GMP to be an excellent platform for reflected discussion on a broad range of topics and well worth paying for.
Plants need water in order to grow and flourish. If you water the weeds instead of the flowers you’ll end up with a garden full of weeds instead of flowers. If you give your money to companies that poison the earth, produce toxic foods and sexist children’s toys instead of companies that produce poison-free, sustainable goods and services – guess what you’ll end up with? I chose to give my money to companies and organizations that manufacture goods and services that I want to exist. GMP is one of them.
