War hero remembered as great father.
—
The Associated Press reports that the last surviving member of the crew who rescued John Kennedy has died. Jack Gardo was a crew member aboard PT-157, the boat sent to rescue Kennedy and his crew after they were rammed by a Japanese destroyer. Mr. Gardo was 87 years old at the time of his death, and had suffered from dementia for the previous six years.
Of greater importance, though, are his son Guy’s words: “You couldn’t ask for a better father than him. He treated us like gold. I’m going to miss him.”
