The new measure declares life begins “at fertilization.”
On Friday, the Kansas House approved what is being called a “sweeping” anti-abortion bill. The Associated Press reports that the bill “blocks tax breaks for abortion providers and outlaws abortions performed solely because of the baby’s sex.” The bill has been sent to Governor Sam Brownback who is expected to sign it in to law within the next few weeks.
The bill also states that life begins “at fertilization,” which supporters are claiming is simply a “statement of principle” and not a true “ban on abortion.” Abortion opponents assert that the bill simply “lessens the state’s entanglement” concerning the termination of pregnancy. However opponents to the measure are skeptical, and argue that it poses a threat to safe access to abortion services.
The measure also makes it illegal for providers of abortion services to be involved in sex education classes in public schools, and gives detailed instructions on exactly what types of information doctors are now required to give patients before providing any abortion services.
