Representative John Carter, of Texas, has had legislation he introduced in an attempt to make the victims of the Fort Hood shooting eligible for purple hearts denied. ABC News reports the response from the Pentagon stated that not only would awarding the victims of the Fort Hood shooting purple hearts “irrevocably alter the fundamental character of this time-honored decoration,” but could also “undermine the prosecution of Major Nidal Hasan” by hurting his chances for a fair trial. The Pentagon still classifies the attack as “workplace violence” and not “combat related.”

As the Army almost says, Purple Heart equals shot in war and we don’t want to go there. Or, more correctly, the CINC don’t want to go there.
