According to the Daily News, approximately 50 residents of Jamaica, Queens, “engaged in a three-hour standoff with police in riot gear last night after a violent drug bust outside a local housing project.” According to the NYPD, officers saw 33-year-old Corey Crichlow with drugs, but when they tried to arrest him his 27-year-old brother Raynard Fields got involved and a fight broke out. Witnesses have a different account. According to several residents who saw the altercation, the officers were already beating Crichlow up and his brother tried to intervene, which caused him to get beat up as well. Residents of the housing project marched to the police station to “protest what they say is a pattern of NYPD brutality against young black men in the neighborhood.” The protest was tense, but not violent.
