No Jetpacks in L.A., No Fact Checkers at Fox

From the channel that brought you the falsified Taliban-trained-monkey-assassin story comes yet another fantastic journalistic oversight—again from its morning show, “Fox and Friends.”

The show’s anchors reported yesterday that the city of Los Angeles had purchased more than a billion dollars in jetpacks for its police and fire departments. (The same departments that can’t afford to pay overtime to its detectives or officers.)

Co-anchor Gretchen Carlson said that she’s “all for buying stuff up and helping the capitalism and all that,” but that maybe this wasn’t the best financial move.

Good call, Gretchen. Turns out your story was taken straight out of the satirical news tabloid, Weekly World News, which essentially just makes things up. Nonetheless, it has dubbed itself “The World’s Only Reliable New Source.”

“We certainly haven’t bought any jetpacks,” said LAPD Chief Charlie Beck in response. “We haven’t bought [squad] cars for two years.”

Then again, maybe some day. We can always hope. And when it does happen, I have no doubt that Fox News will be all over it.
