Jamie Reidy rants about AT&t’s lack of cell phone service at the Kentucky Derby.
Yesterday, I attended the Kentucky Oaks horserace, an annual delight for me that is marred by my inability to contact any of my friends who might also be at Churchill Downs.
“Searching.” That’s what my iPhone told me throughout the day, when it wasn’t at “no bars.”
How AT&T can legally air commercials stating “more bars in more places,” I dunno. Anytime I am at a major event – Notre Dame football game, U2 at the Rose Bowl, etc – my iPhone gets no reception.
How fucking hard is it to drive a flatbed truck with several cell towers into a parking lot??? Uh, gee, 140,000 people are gonna be in one area of Louisville on Saturday… maybe we should attempt to provide them with service.
As a severe lightning storm blew into town, I couldn’t even text friends telling them to seek shelter inside the grandstands. Meanwhile, Verizon customers all around me were able to watch the storm’s progress on their iPhones. #AT&TEpicFail
So, as I get ready for today’s Kentucky Derby, I’m making sure to charge my iPhone. After all, “searching” uses up a lot of battery power.

Newsflash: You can get a Verizon iPhone! I have one… Though I still think it 80% sucks and am strongly considering going back to the Droid 3. Now THAT is a good phone.
