Are certain tattoos off-limits to men?
One Direction singer Harry Styles is causing quite a stir with his newest piece of body art, which is a large black butterfly in the center of his chest. Although you can’t actually see his face in the photo, E! News reports that a representative for the star said that it is “definitely” Styles in the photo.
Twitter is of course, all aflutter with the news. Some fans love the new artwork,

But it seems that most of the comments are leaning more toward the side of ridicule,

The fact that Styles, who according to the Daily Mail already has almost 30 tattoos, decided to get what many critics are claiming is a very “feminine” tattoo, has me a bit curious.
Are there certain tattoos that are specifically “masculine” or “feminine”?
If a tattoo has significant meaning to the person “wearing” it, should the distinction really matter?

I don’t see what is so feminine about the butterfly. It’s like when a guy wears a pink shirt, instant ridicule.
Except when it’s Dexter Morgan apparently, he wears one regularly in his show, and no one even notices.
Well, this one is pretty phallic (which by definition is masculine) even though it’s on the lower back of a woman. And it’s a butterfly as well.
@Tamen- Hah! How about a NSFW label…
If you failed to guess that the word phallic made that a risky click you should be innocent enough to get off by claming that it is in fact a tattoo of a butterfly. 🙂
It could have been the Washington monument…
Yes, it could have been the Washington monument, but would that really make any difference?
I would suggest geography rather than graphics decide gender….
Show of hands; is there a masculine tramp stamp?
Oops that will get me a demerit.
The equivalent would probably be the arm band “tribal” tattoo.
Or “Your Name” on my ass

Funny how it wouldn’t have been such an issue for all these people if it had had a fatter thorax and abdomen and more feathered antennas. Then it would be a moth. Which is considered a more masculine insect than those daintly and nectar sipping butterflies.
I agree with other posters, I don’t see anything wrong with a guy having a butterfly tattoo. His body – his decision.
I also find it quite sad people use “gay” and “girl” as an insult so often. Seriously, I think we could all do a bit better than this.
i agree with ben n john
the tat seems too large for where it is. i would have placed it at an angle on the side of the torso
I don’t understand why butterfly considered feminine.
Tattoos, to me, aren’t either ‘masculine’ or ‘feminine.’ If anything, they should be considered personal expression. A good tattoo is nothing less than a artistic representation of the individual that has it.
