As much as everyone loves classic rock, there are a lot of great new bands and musicians out there right now.
Who are some of your favorites?
And since we know you’re going to ask the definition of “new”, let’s arbitrarily say any group or artist who had their first hit in the last 2-3 years, in any musical category.
I’m really enjoying Michael Kiwanuka
I’m newly addicted to Mumford and Sons, The Civil Wars, and my all time favorite is Dave Matthews. Then again I’m also addicted to Evanescence, Breaking Benjamin and Motley Crue. So…I like a lot of different music.
I recently hung out with a band called Ha Ha Tonka, Murder by Death, and Langhorne Slim. All very cool people with a different sound and still up and coming. You should check them out.
Can I say myself? I don’t have a hit, and I’m mostly (completely) unknown, but I have faith in myself and dig my own tunes. ;o) Hey, a girls’ gotta get a plug whenever and however she can.
Shawn Maxam nails it in the Rock/Alternative section
Just got to say:
Alt-J Alt-J Alt-J.
And Daughter and Keaton Henson!
Alabama Shakes!
If you like rock, and indie and maybe a little bluesy bluegrass you will love Banana Gun!! Their new album, The Elephant in the Room is available at iTunes. Check them out of Facebook…Banana Gun!

David Bazan’s newest record Strange Negotiations
Noah Gundersen’s Family
Field Report
Cataldo
Not “new” but his new record Strange Negotiations is great: David Bazan.
Also, Cataldo, Noah Gundersen, and Field Report.
If you like metal, Speedwolf is the best new metal band, hands down. Unreal.
Jay Brannan has been one of my favorites since I discovered him in late 2008, so not super new but he just released his second full-length album a few months ago. Check him out at jaybrannan.com
Young the Giant is by far my favorite new band lately.
Hip-Hop/Rap:
Big K.R.I.T.
J.Cole
Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover)
Rock/Alternative:
The xx
Of Monster and Men
Bon Iver
Mumford and Sons
Vampire Weekend
R&B/Pop:
Frank Ocean
Adele
The Weeknd
Shawn, have you heard the new Mumford single I was Tweeting about last night? It’s insane.
I agree on all these, except then I learned that there’s some fancy way to pronounce Bon Iver… I was just saying “Bon I-ver”… annoying young people!
There’s a fancy way to say Bon Iver? Uh oh. And I just found out I was mispronouncing Gotye too. Apparently it’s not “gotcha”
